How Do I Get Consistent, High-Quality Images on my Website?

February 22, 2023

High quality images are one of the keys to success when selling online. Here are our quick tips on how to make sure your photography and products look amazing.

  • Saved as JPEGs - saved for web at approximately 40% quality. This gives a good level of compression with a negligible drop in visual quality.
  • Their file size should be as small as possible without sacrificing quality. A typical product photo should be around 40kb-80kb. A homepage banner might be 100kb-180kb (although ideally less).
  • Images dimensions are defined in pixels (not mm, cm or pts). This means DPI is irrelevant (you can set as 72 DPI if your image software requires this).
  • Product images should be at least 1200px on the longest edge.
  • The exact pixel dimensions will be provided to you by the designer on the project.
  • When getting lifestyle imagery, ensure you obtain lots of landscape / panoramic shots, ideally with space around the focal element of the image to allow us to re-crop, overlay text etc. This is particularly important for homepage imagery.
  • If you're considering having banner imagery across the top of category pages (e.g. like this: http://www.monicavinader.com/shop/pendants/sort-by/our-favourites ), then ensure you get plenty of wide panoramic shots produced.

Doing it Yourself

You can achieve the above using an image editing tool such as Photoshop. We can provide photoshop templates for all image types on your new website to help you with this. We've already written a guide called 9 essentials for perfect product photography that should help you get started.

However, if you have little experience with Photoshop, you may struggle. In which case, we suggest paying for the services of an image editor. For the production of more complex images which include text (e.g. homepage banners, call-out blocks etc.) we can produce these for you.
